About me

Amrita Choudhury has been teaching for the past 32 years and founded Nritya Yoga™ - Amrita Method in 1999. She was educated at Rabindranath Tagore's school /ashram in India (Santiniketan), where the relationship between nature, spirituality and the arts was part of everyday life.

 Amrita's greatest sources of inspiration were her late grandfather, a great Yogi and Shaivite priest in India, Sashimani Mahari - the last surviving temple Yogini of East India who has been her personal teacher, her great Aunt & saint - Anandamayee Ma, and her Dance Gurus : her mother & Guru Chittaranjan Acharya. 

Amrita is educated in the sacred arts of dance, yoga and mudras and works in the field of Movement/Dance Therapy. She has also performed Anthropological research related to the ancient Tantric temple yogi/yoginis of India and their dance/yoga practices. In Nritya Yoga, she goes back to the ancient Indian philosophies of Yoga and Dance and brings it back to a more contemporary setting where people from all walks of life can benefit from. Her work is greatly influenced by the ancient Tantric, Vaishnava and Vedic traditions of ancient Indian Yoga & Sacred Dance.

Amrita also works in the field of " Dance & Education" and has devoted much of her life to teaching children and adults through schools, colleges, organizations such as " Cultures without Borders", and offering private & public workshops. 

Her work has been featured in Canadian Broadcasting Corporation Television and Radio, Radio Canada TV & radio, The History Channel, Canadian Television Network, TVA Television, Doordarshan Indian Television, European Radio, Accent Magazine, and many other publications, radio and Television broadcasts internationally. 

Amrita carries a degree in Anthropology, travels globally offering workshops & performances, and is a respected Yoga-Dance researcher, teacher and choreographer. She believes that Yoga, Movement & Dance is the source of life, an expression of life and and simply a way of life; an ancient philosophy of life in graceful motion.!

Nritya Yoga - Yoga of Dance, created by Amrita, concentrates on the physical, emotional, spiritual, and socio-cultural aspects of ancient sacred movement, dance, Yoga and Meditation.

Yoga and Indian Sacred dance are inseparable. It is believed that the sacred scriptures were handed down to us through expression, movement, and rhythm of dance; a dynamic form of Yoga (jyog)! 

This class/workshop offers a holistic practice that goes beyond technique and structure; and emphasizes the whole being , as a continuous form in joyful, ecstatic motion. Nritya Yoga uses various ancient Tantric, Vaishnava and Buddhist philosophies, techniques of Movement, Yoga and Sacred Dance and brings it back to a more contemporary setting so it can be practiced by all. 

Classes & Workshops include: 

1) Nritya Yoga Postures (using eye, breath, neck, Mudras(hand gestures), spine, torso, feet, body & visualization techniques) 

2) Vibrant, powerful, & joyful Trance Dance (Tantric, Vaishnava, Sufi and many more Trance dance traditions)

3) Meditation in Motion using Mudras (sacred hand gestures) & sacred sanskrit mantra chanting . 

An experience that truly incorporates the body, mind & spirit; spiritually inspiring and soulfully uplifting! We explore the ancient philosophies of our creative/sensual energies through this compassionate, graceful, and joyful voyage of the ecstatic soul!
